Romans 8:5-8

Romans 8:5-8 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.   The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.   The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.   Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

Paul continues to distinguish the actions and inclinations of Saints in contrast with unbelievers.  Saints are governed by the indwelling Holy Spirit and have their minds set on the things the Spirit desires.  These things lead to life and peace.  On the other hand unbelievers are governed by the desires of the flesh and seek out desires of the flesh, which leads to death.

Unbelieving sinners cannot please God or submit to God’s law.  Praise God that he has saved us through the blood of Jesus Christ and also given us a new heart and new attitude through the indwelling Holy Spirit.
