In verses one through three Paul gives an example to show how believers have died to the law. Here in verse four he goes further and states that through the body of Christ a believer is no longer under the law. He now belongs to Christ, and not the Mosaic Law. This means the whole law and not just part of it.
Nowhere does Paul divide the law into three parts and place New Covenant believers under one of the three parts as some believe. This does not mean that all of the ethical principles of the Mosaic Law are no longer valid. It does mean they are no longer given through the Mosaic Covenant, which demanded external obedience to avoid curses. This is legalism and the New Covenant replaces Old Covenant legalism with Jesus Christ and a new way to relate to God as Paul goes on to explain. This new way enables believers to bear fruit for God. Paul explains how the old way did not bear fruit for God, but bore fruit for death in the next two verses.
